Dublin Groundbreaking of OCLC - 1979
Groundbreaking of OCLC, Online Computing Library in Dublin
In 1979, the OCLC cooperative broke ground for a new facility on 40 acres of farm land in Dublin, Ohio. Hard to believe today, but there was not even a restaurant in Dublin in 1979, so the facility had to include an employee cafeteria. At the groundbreaking ceremony, OCLC Founder Fred Kilgour boldly stated that the new facility is not a base but a catapult into the future.
OCLC is a nonprofit, membership, computer library service and research organization dedicated to the public purposes of furthering access to the world’s information and reducing information costs. More than 72,000 libraries in 86 countries and territories around the world use OCLC services to locate, acquire, catalog, lend and preserve library materials.
