Alexander Wilmer Livingston began domesticating the tomato and produced the first successful variety in 1870. Alexander founded the Livingston Seed Company in 1876. Livingston's experiments with tomato varieties on his farm near Reynoldsburg were so successful that the community was dubbed the Tomato Capital.
