Tony West - musician, artist, educator - talks about the King-Lincoln District, how the Lincoln Theatre was the center of the artistic community, and how he hopes it will return to greatness.
Jeff Abraxas, the artist who created many of the murals in the King-Lincoln neighbhorhood on Mt. Vernon Ave. and Long Street, died Thursday, May 6, 2010, at the age of 39. He created this mural on Long St. just east of I-71 because he wanted young people in the neighborhood to become familiar with the song "Lift Every Voice and Sing," for years known as "The Negro National Anthem." Here's the link to a radio story WOSU ran about Jeff:
Once the cultural and commercial heart of Columbus for African Americans, this neighborhood is poised for rebirth. The restoration of the King Lincoln Theatre was one of the most anticipated projects in the city. Now completed, it joins the King Arts Complex in shaping and developing this historic neighborhood. King-Lincoln still echoes with the joyous sounds of the storied musicians who played its clubs and theatres and the din of bustling streets lined with thriving businesses.
