Grandview Heights

The first First Community Church being built 1910

This picture shows the construction of the first First Community Church in Grandview Heights. This picture was taken in 1910. What is interesting is to see horse drawn carts carrying stones to the site. No doubt the stones were quarried at the nearby quarries in the Sciota River. Also notice, even in 1910 how many electic and telephone poles are on the street. And for construction folks, notice to how they framed the windows before they put up the stone walls.

Schools Kindergarten Annex (1950)

Built in 1950 across from the Edison Elementary School on the site of the old Harding School building, the annex was an award-winning design that incorporated furniture and facilities that were built to the needs of the kindergarten student. Door handles were lower, furniture was smaller, lockers were kid-sized, etc. It also had a fully equipped kitchen, and everything was done in "cheerful" colors and styles that were attractive to kids of this age.

Grandview Heights

About this neighborhood

In 1842, the present Grandview Heights area was divided into 12 plots, with county roads situated at the locations of Dublin Road, Olentangy River Road, and Fifth Avenue. The first school was established at the corner of Dublin and Grandview Avenue (unofficially called Walcutt's School), and its designation was Franklin Township School. In 1901, the entire area between the two rivers, and roughly King Avenue, became united as the Hamlet of Marble Cliff for the first and last time.
