Central YMCA Basketball Team, 1905

The game of Basketball has its origins at the YMCA. In 1891, Dr. James Naismith, at the YMCA Training School in Springfield, Massachusetts, invented an indoor recreational activity to play during the long, cold winters: basketball.

The Godman Guild produced some star athletes: Hank Gowdy (Major League Baseball), and William "Plunk" Ford and Murray "Chock" Ford, brothers both played for the Harlem Globetrotters, and Archie Moore boxed Caccius Clay in the 1960's.
