About State Auto
Frustrated by insurance rates that were unreasonably high and claims settlements that were poorly handled, Robert Pein was determined to create a new kind of insurance company-one based on the Golden Rule and dedicated to serving the needs of the community. As a result, in 1921, State Automobile Mutual Insurance Company was founded.
With three employees and a rented room in downtown Columbus, Pein set out to tackle inequities in the insurance industry. From the very beginning, State Auto advocated the independent agency system as the best approach to serving the needs of its policyholders. To this day, as hometown neighbors, local independent agents continue to provide efficient, professional and more personalized service than that of their competitors. Just like Robert Pein had always dreamed.
Today, the State Auto Group employs approximately 2,200 associates and markets its products through more than 3,000 independent agencies in 33 states. The Group includes State Automobile Mutual Insurance Company, one of only 13 companies in the United States to have received an A+ (Excellent) rating from the A.M. Best Co. every year since 1954.
State Auto continues to deliver on Robert Pein's promise to millions of policyholders who count on State Auto as a stable, strong and financially secure protector of homes, autos, and businesses. It's a legacy State Auto's outstanding employees and agents look forward to carrying on for years to come.
