About AEP and AEP Ohio

AEP and its AEP Ohio operating unit have roots in central Ohio going back to the earliest years of the 20th Century. That’s when forerunners of Columbus & Southern Ohio Electric began providing electricity to supplant gas lights and power for interurban railways.
AEP acquired C&SOE in 1980 and in 1983 completed the move of AEP’s headquarters to Columbus from New York City. C&SOE became Columbus Southern Power and later AEP Ohio, which currently serves more than 1.5 million customers in the Buckeye State.
American Electric Power is one of the largest electric utilities in the United States, delivering electricity to more than 5 million customers in 11 states. AEP ranks among the nation’s largest generators of electricity, owning nearly 38,000 megawatts of generating capacity in the U.S. AEP also owns the nation’s largest electricity transmission system, a nearly 39,000-mile network that includes more 765 kilovolt extra-high voltage transmission lines than all other U.S. transmission systems combined.
At its heart, AEP remains committed to providing reliable, affordable power to our customers as reflected in our mission: Bringing comfort to our customers, supporting business and commerce, and building strong communities.
Former AEP President George Tidd wrote in 1934, “We are citizens of each community we serve and take an active part in its affairs. Like any other citizen, we want our neighbors to think well of us. Besides, it makes good business sense. We prosper only as the community prospers, so we help it thrive in every way we can.”
Those words still ring true, and AEP and AEP Ohio are proud to be a part part of central Ohio, supporting and playing an active, positive role in the communities where we live and work.
